Top Ten Weird Manga Titles (and Five Awesome Ones)

In the receiving room we have an ongoing debate over the most insane manga titles we’ve ever seen, and I’ve compiled a list of offenders.

By way of Japanese-imported video games and to a lesser extent, movies, I’m familiar with English translations creating verbal Frankensteins. But this is no excuse for the following titles appearing as they are on an American bookshelf:

  1. Bobobo-bo, Bo-bobo
  2. Fruits Basket
  3. Zatch Bell!
  4. Sumomomo Momomo: The Strongest Bride on Earth
  5. Absolute Boyfriend
  6. Oh My Goddess! (And how comes this preoccupation with exclamation points? Negima! Rin! Yu-gi-Oh! Shugo Chara! Skip Beat! Gimmick! Reborn!…)
  7. Yotsuba&! (because it has not only an unnecessary exclamation… but an unnecessary ampersand, as well!)
  8. Hayate the Combat Butler
  9. Only the Ring Finger Knows
  10. Pig Bride

But let’s be fair– some of the manga titles end up being kind of rad. Like these.

  1. Full Metal Alchemist
  2. Lady Snowblood
  3. Neon Genesis Evangelion
  4. Rurouni Kenshin
  5. Old Boy (Here I might be biased: I loved the movie)

Isn’t translation funny, hahahaha?? How do they get away with such nonsense? Why, it makes me so angry!!!

  1. But isn’t that what makes Manga fun? I haven’t read any manga for over a year, but I love the tongue-in-cheek attitude of the Japanese.

    Very addictive.

‘Old Boy’ the movie was amazing.
